Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there any charge for this service?

No. Support is offered free of charge to both companies and individuals.

  • Do I have to be a Christian to contact you?

No, not at all.
The site is run by Christians and the response you get back will reflect Christian beliefs. However, we do not use our site to promote Christianity. The Workplace Chaplaincy Team at St Peter's in Nottingham city centre is a member of the Nottingham Interfaith Council and we work at maintaining ecumenical links. The Workplace Chaplains are not all Anglican. Please have a look at our page giving links to sites with information about other faiths.

  • I would really rather talk to someone over the phone, is that possible?

Yes it is. If you send an e-mail asking for this kind of contact, we can arrange for a Chaplain to ring you.

  • I have a problem that isn’t related to work, is it still ok to contact you?

Absolutely, we are here to offer support for any issues that you have at the moment. Please see our 'What is iChaplaincy page' for examples of the type of support we offer. Although don't worry if you want to talk about something which isn't on that list.

  • Do I have to give my real name?

No, if you feel more comfortable using a false name or no name at all, that is fine.

  • I am interested in having my baby/young child baptised, is this the kind of question I can ask?

Yes. If you have any questions about baptism, marriage, death or anything else connected to church, please feel free to e-mail.

  • Do I have to contact you from my work computer?

No. If you have access to a computer at home or in your local library, you can access our website at www.ichaplaincy.org.uk and contact the iChaplain just as easily.

  • If I work in another part of the Country, other than Nottingham, can I still contact you?

Yes, it doesn't matter which part of the country you live/work in.

  • Can I e-mail you anonymously?

The easiest way to maintain your anonymity is to create a free e-mail address specifically for contacting us.

(You can do this, for example, at www.yahoo.co.uk, www.hotmail.com or GMail, and this means that you can access your mail through a web browser (like Internet Explorer or Firefox). As far as we are aware companies cannot monitor e-mails viewed through a web browser. )

  • How do I know that my employer will not pick up my e-mails?

Unfortunately we are unable to provide any assurances on this question which is why it is always advisable to use as little personal information as possible. Employers have the right to intercept e-mails. If this site is appearing on your company’s intranet, then you should check your company's e-mail policy. You can of course contact us through your home computer or your local library

  • How confidential are my e-mails?

Whilst we may either appear or have a link on your company's intranet, we must stress that we work independently of the company. Just as when you talk to a Church of England minister, any e–mails you send to the iChaplain will be held in the strictest confidence, unless you give permission for the details to be shared. Nothing will be reported back to your workplace.

Despite the popularity of e-mails, it can never be considered a secure method of communication and so any personal details should be kept to a minimum.

If you are concerned about e-mail security through your company intranet, please check your company's policy on e-mail.

I would still encourage you to write. You can of course access us through your home computer or in your local library.

However, we can accept no responsibility for intercepted e-mails.

As a matter of good practice, you should delete personal e-mails from your work computer especially if other people have access to it or overlook it.

  • I would rather e-mail a male chaplain; is this possible?

Yes it is. Just put this in the subject of your e-mail and we will make sure a male chaplain contacts you.
  • If I e-mail a Chaplain and then decide not to reply back, will you chase me?

No. We take the confidentiality and anonymity we offer seriously. Obviously if you don’t receive a reply then try again because this will mean that we haven’t received your email. But if we send a reply and we don’t get a reply then we won’t try again. It doesn’t mean we don’t care but we respect your right to privacy.  If you would like to send an e-mail telling us of your progress we would love to hear from you but obviously we leave that decision with you.
